Apple Macbook Pro 17 coll, 2009 model
See the specs on Apple’s site.
Some highlights that I like, or deem to be interesting:
- It supports DDR3 memory (1066mhz), and 2 x 4gb pieces of them. The price is a bit steep as of now (going with 2 x 4gb instead of 2 x 2 gb sets you back with around USD 1000) › Continue reading

Before you go any further: I think now that PCWiz’s OSx86 install disc that is based on the latest and greatest 10.5.6 Leopard is way better than iDeneb. PCWiz’s has support for the below mentioned ADI 1988b audio card (in / out ports work fine) it has USB 2.0 speed on all USB ports (iDeneb, after updating to 10.5.6 fucked it up maybe not iDeneb’s fault btw.) it has the proper (resolution adjustable!) Intel GMA950 drivers, and it also has the nice voodoo kernel for those AMD and only SSE2 capable processors. You can grab it at the proper places (like various “topic oriented” portals, torrent pages, etc. check the comments below for hints). Now you can read what’s below.
So after my bit unfaithful macbook pro decided to leave me alone, blinded (display problem, see my previous posts) - I decided that I need to get a small, hackintosh compatible desktop computer soon. I started at osx86project.org, with the wiki. Since I really liked ASUS’s barebone computers, mainly those small and quiet booksize barebones - after going thru the HCL - I decided to get an ASUS P2-P5945G(C)(X) system.
It has an ASUS P5L motherboard, with one sata2 connector, and one IDE, and you can fit in one DVD / blu-ray writer and a 3.5 hard drive. It has an integrated gigabit ethernet adapter, and integrated audio, plus integrated video. Intel GMA950 namely. As the older macbooks also had these, it has a native driver built into OSX. It is not too speedy but it can play back videos, blu-ray movies, and can run small games which is not more than I need. It also has a dual DVI adapter + VGA going out. So you can rub those huge 2560 pixel wide resolutions as well. I am fine with a 24″ samsung LCD at 1920×1200 though. The motherboard also has a PCI riser card with 2 slots on it, so you can put a wifi card in there or something. It also has a small 4-pin firewire + 2 usb in the front panel, and 4 more hi-speed usb slots in the back. More than enough I thought.

Once upon a time my faithful macbook pro computer decided to bite the bullet. Just after the 2008 Drupalcon conference held in Szeged (Hungary). I have bought it from the USA sometime around August, 2007. It “died” around the first days of September. Right on time, after the one year warranty has expired. Of course I was very upset because
- I had work to do (even if I tend to be a bit lazy)
- I had an other laptop, but it is quite old, and very slow (1.5ghz 1gb ram, ibm t40) with windows on it
So after looking into the issue over the internet, I have found that there are lots of people with such problems. See this google search for more information, and…
See these threads on apple’s own support forums:
There is also a google document with very detailed information from various people having the same issue. The list is quite long, at the moment more than 250 entries are there.
Before I go into my short adventure, please be assured that if you are having the same problem, then Apple now has officially admitted that the problem exists, and they are doing a repair (replacing the logic board, a USD 1000 priced heart of the laptop) free of charge, if you have bought your computer in the last 2 years (since laptops affected are made between 2007 may - 2008 sep? this is fine). This is great news, but it was only posted on the 10th of October.
